Ten years later - The TATA Nano

The concept of the TATA’s One Lakh car was displayed as Zing during Auto Expo 1998, but not many had noticed it then since the spotlight was on the TATA Indica.

Ten years later, in Auto Expo 2008, TATA’s unveiled the much touted One Lakh Car - Nano.

TATA’s have done a fabulous job with the car and an equally great job building the suspense around it making Nano the most hyped and awaited vehicle of the year which, I think, will go a long way in building the initial line-up of customers for its commercial launch towards the second half of 2008.

“Mera-Bharat-Mhan ” The best thing that could have happened in India after the Dhirubhai - Telecom episode, is the launching of Tata Nano by Ratan Tata. ” Three cheers for the TATA’s & all its vendor’s” - As a vendor of TISCO we are the third generation and we do appreciate the applaudable efforts put in by the TATA group to achieve its aims upholding QUALITY & COMMITMENT at grass root levels. Regards and best wishes to all for a Happy and prosperous year 2008.

Thanks for posting the picture of Tata Zing. Brings back the memories of 10 years ago when I was working at Tata Motors (known as TELCO) at their styling studio in Pune. I was part of the design team that conceptualized the micro car Zing…(and I am happy to add that it was based on one of my sketches). It was born of a desire to create a car that was smaller and affordable to the masses…a dream that was shared by many in the company including Mr. Ratan Tata. I left the company in 1999 to pursue other interests in the US. I am very proud and happy that Mr. Ratan Tata and his team saw promise in the tiny car and finally turned it into a reality in the form of Tata Nano….even if it took 10 long years. I am happy that a low cost alternative is available to millions more in this world. Congratulations to Tatas and India!

    Nikhil,

Thanks for your comment. It must be a great moment for you. You must be proud to have been part of this phenomenon which TIME has recognized as one of dozen most important cars of all time starting from 1908 to present.
