TATA Sierra
I am of the opinion that a certain product fails in the market if it is either outdated or if it is launched prematurely. The Tata Sierra would be a classic example for the latter category. Had TATA’s introduced this vehicle now and not in 1991-92, when it actually did, don’t you think the probability of this vehicle selling better would be higher? Ofcourse, I am not saying that it would sell as much as their Sumo, but it still would do much better than it did over a decade ago.
The economic scenario today is much different than it was then, car buyers are getting younger and people have started appreciating features in a car and are ready to pay a premium for vehicles which have distinctive features. Consider the case of the Maruti Swift, the Vxi and Zxi which are packed with more features like ABS and Airbags are selling more than the stripped off Lxi. The diesel engine technology has matured and is much more refined now thanks to the Common Rail Diesel a.k.a DICOR as Tata’s would want to call it. People have started spending more on holidaying and driving out. The IT sector has blossomed and the affordability has gone up.
Why shouldn’t TATA’s consider re-launching this SUV, along with the new TATA Safari (pic below) which they are planning to launch sometime in the mid of 2007 which boasts of a more powerful 2.2 L DICOR engine (the one which was featured in the Bologna Car show, in Jan this year). The Sierra could be launched with the same engine as that of the new Safari and ofcourse, keep the pricing right (It could probably stick to the revised prices which it has now - about a lakh off on the Safari) and I am sure TATA’s would have winners in their stable with the power packed and stylish Safari and Sierra to compete with the Scorpio. By the bye, M&M is planning to launch a new Scorpio with a refined CRDe engine soon.

You said it!!! Sierra.. LEGENDRY!!!
Scorpios do not have that touch of classe’. I’ve got a wider door on the spare toilet outside my house.
Excellent post and idea. All TATA needs to do is to do the TL sprint treatment to the TATA Sierra and the Dicor 3000 cc diesel engine. The car would sell around 2000 + per month as there is a great demand in the Northen belts like the Punjab and Haryana.
Macho image, solid looks and TATA image would be added advantanges plus depreciated plant and dies would make the car cost much less than competitors ( there is virtually no competition here ) and the car should cost around 4.5 lakhs to 5.5. lakhs.
I wil have to agree with you guys, Sierra was / is a class apart!
The story of Sierra is like Yash Chopra’s Anil Kapoor starer “Lamhe”, which is a classic, but unfortunately released much earlier. Most of the Sierra owners don’t even want to sell their Sierra. I just wish, Sierra to be a Phoenix bird.
we cannot compare any car with sierra the reason because it is totally different,by look, shape, features etc there are some defects
as well but if we take sierra as an personal car it is awesome car
large space, mini giant look is its best part.
I purchaes a second hand sierra before two years for Rs 90000 which had clocked 1,50,000 km . It is still a head turner where ever I go. Although not reliable as the newer genration vehicles , this vehicle gives me a reassuring feeling equvialent to the classic bullet owners feeling. A spacious vehicle with good handling in highways ,it is indeed a classic and rugged vehicle from TATA stable. It requires a spirit of freedom like a soul of a albatoss to really enjoy the drive in a TATA sierra.
I love to own one sierra car in my life and it looks great, when i see it every time on road i feel some thing from my heart
Yep, Sierra was way ahead of its time.
I love the Sierra now as much as I loved it back then, possibly more since I’m looking to buy it now! I hope to get a good car at a good price soon.
@vaishag: Thats a jolly good analog. :)
I own a Tata Sierra basic model and its one of the best vehicles i have driven. I have a Accent and i think driving a Sierra makes me feel like, im driving a pleasure…and maneuvering is v.nice and power steering makes it best in its kind..
I love my Sierra & I want to keep it ALIVE ! I swear. I have an Enfield Bullet . Both Sierra and Bullet are LEGENDARY. Tata should sincerely give a second thought to revive this early hatch. Very few Pure Indian SUVs or maybe none can match this LEGEND. Taste or Test it, it really Fills or Feels !
Looks a nice car
